ABOUT TRAVIS

Join Us in Building a Better Community

Wake County is growing fast. In fact, it’s one of the fastest growing places in North Carolina. Of course, with the rapid growth there are also growing pains. Traffic is getting much busier so roads need to be built, widened and expanded. Keeping supply and demand for housing in balance is a challenge, as is reliably getting the maximum bang for the taxpayers’ bucks when rapid growth makes everything a moving target.

WHO IS TRAVIS GROO?

Travis Groo is a dedicated father, a hard worker and an active member of his community. He believes in the power of freedom and prosperity for all, and is committed to making Wake County a better place for everyone to live and thrive. As a candidate for NC House 36, Travis is passionate about making a real difference in the lives of his fellow residents.

A COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY

Travis Groo is a principled and a self-motivated human, and a proud dad of two wonderful kids, who believes that hard work always pays off. He works towards a free, peaceful, and prosperous world where every individual has the opportunity to pursue their unique vision of a rewarding and enriching life. “We moved to Wake County from Atlanta back in 2013 and I don’t recall a single day in all these years living here that I wasn’t grateful we made that decision,” he says. “We have almost everything good about Atlanta here, and not much of what’s bad. While growth and change are inevitable, I am motivated to help preserve what’s great about our community for my family and neighbors here.”

Our Vision: The Issues

Working Together for a Better North Carolina

  • Housing Affordability: With Wake County being so popular, rising property values are inevitable. We should avoid the path Raleigh took—using zoning regulations to restrict vast areas to single-family houses only—thus pricing their teachers, police, firemen, and other service professionals out of being able to afford to live where they work. As the county continues to grow it’s vital to accommodate various housing options, including townhomes, duplexes, triplexes, and tiny homes. If our zoning regulations enable builders and owners to be creative with their property, supply and demand will be in better balance.

  • Education: Parents deserve more control over where their children go to school. North Carolina can promote a dynamic, future-oriented educational system based on choice. Students and families need choices among diverse, robust approaches. They need choices that promote high-quality and responsive educational environments. They need choices tailored to the needs of individual students and the future they face. We can achieve outstanding education policy for a better North Carolina with these choices.

  • Healthcare: Access to high-quality, affordable healthcare is a critical concern in everyone’s life. We want the rapid pace of innovation and adoption that has cured disease and delivered world-class treatments. We also want a system that is within the reach of everyone in North Carolina. With state regulation controlling every aspect of health delivery, legislative and bureaucratic policy plays a major role in the quality, access, and affordability of our healthcare system. Travis will work to abolish all Certificate of Need laws.

  • Finances: We should always be mindful of who’s actually paying for things: it’s the people’s hard-earned money being spent. Bond-funded projects—which essentially are deferred tax increases—need close scrutiny, particularly now, with interest rates so high. We should get the public opinion and consent before moving forward on any project. Travis will put the taxpayer at the heart of all we do. We should seek sustainable outcomes, built on the foundation of doing the right thing, both financially and ethically.

  • Growth: Managing the inevitable growth that comes with living in such a desirable area is a challenge. This region is poised for tremendous opportunity that needs to be carefully managed and evaluated so we don’t have to fix something later. Let’s do it right the first time. Travis wants this area to grow in a responsible manner, which means also protecting private property rights.

  • Individual Rights: Travis embraces the concept that all people are born with certain inherent rights, and upholds and defends the rights of every person, regardless of their race, ethnicity, or any other aspect of their identity. He rejects the idea that a natural right can ever impose an obligation upon others to fulfill that “right,” and rejects all attempts by federal, state, or local governments to deny any person their natural rights. He also condemns bigotry as irrational and repugnant.

  • Environment: The traditional Victory Garden is a well-known American tradition. The value of the home garden for supplementing our diets with fresh produce, teaching horticultural skills, and fostering a broader respect for our environment is immeasurable. Additionally, community garden tours bring us closer together as neighbors and friends. Travis will work to foster this and remove barriers to home farms. We must also work together with volunteers to establish functional native (xeriscape) habitat islands throughout our beautiful county.

  • Instant Runoff Voting: Elections in Wake County are adjudicated using the “non-partisan plurality” rule, which basically means that whoever gets the most votes wins. Sounds good in theory, but in practice, we often end up with “winners” who get less than a majority of the vote. Travis will work to get our towns and cities in Wake, to petition the North Carolina General Assembly to allow municipalities and the county the option of utilizing the “instant runoff” rule—a/k/a ranked-choice voting—which ensures that every winner is elected by a majority of all voters without the need for a costly runoff election.
